About the book

Japan is easy to research. Deciding what deserves a place in your journey is harder.

The Thoughtful Traveller’s Guide to Japan is a culturally informed guide for independent travellers who want practical guidance and considered judgement, not simply a longer list of attractions.

For first-time and returning visitors, it helps readers build a journey around their interests, time and preferred pace; decide what is worth the detour; understand the history and culture still visible in contemporary Japan; and look beyond the most familiar route.

This is not a phrasebook, destination directory or collection of obligatory sights. It is a deeper guide to choosing where to go—and noticing more once you arrive.
